OLHA NIMAK
HOMELAND
Oil on paper
Olha Nimak's Homeland is a work that is both delightfully playful and disquietingly uncomfortable. This abstract piece conveys the deep feeling of a place, with passages of broad, expansive colour, flat, bold, heavy. Sharp edges and high contrast add to the discomfort and render an idea of building or machinery, an interested exploration into the manmade. Surreal yet weighted in the cogs of reality, the human-made edges of the artist's world are depicted. Olha plays with the sculptural qualities of the objects; they hold their space, they have a density and presence, they relate to each other. The simplified forms, flattened and viewed from different angles at the same time, are observed as if from a geometric reality. Structural and controlled. Oil paint creates a thick, slickness to the piece and again gives a weighty opacity, adding to the reality of the heavy machinery and the presence of the objects in their environment, even if what they are isn't so certain, or indeed, relevant.
