About the Exhibitors

Cheltenham Group of Artists currently comprises of 25 professional artists. Individually the artists exhibit nationally and internationally – as a group they come together at least twice a year to exhibit new work. The 2024 Summer Show at Sixteen is exciting, providing a new venue in Cheltenham for the group and continuing a long tradition of showing work from the members in Cheltenham

The Cheltenham Group of Artists was formed in 1920 with the aim of bringing together local professional artists and to hold joint exhibitions of their work.

The first CGA members were already quite distinguished and included members of the London based New English Art Club, and Royal Academicians (RA). In more recent times the membership included Lecturers from Cheltenham School of Art, (now University of Gloucestershire). In this exhibition several artists are graduates from the University’s Fine Art courses. CGA Chair, Nick Sargeant, is a recent former Head of Art & Design at the University.

From its formation the group exhibited annually at the Cheltenham Art Gallery and Museum. Each year a purchase prize was linked to these shows and a benefit of these acquisitions is that the Gallery, renamed The Wilson, now holds and exhibits a substantial collection that includes work by members of the group spanning much of the 20th Century.
