bio
Ella (Gabrielle) Moulding is a UK-based painter whose practice is deeply shaped by her experience living abroad, travel and immersion within the landscape.
Raised in the Cotswolds and educated at Edinburgh University, she later worked in the Fine Arts sector in London before spending 17 years living internationally and raising her family in France, South Africa, South Korea, Australia, Japan, and the United States. She is now based in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.
Central to Ella’s work is her experience of artist residencies, which have become a defining force in her creative development. In 2022, she was selected for a residency at Noce Fresca in Sardinia, followed by the Scuola Internazionale di Grafica in Venice in 2023. In 2024, she was awarded a place at the prestigious Tyrone Guthrie Centre in Ireland. Most recently, she undertook a residency at the Skopelos Foundation for the Arts in Greece. These periods of focused painting and sketching,
often situated within the Mediterranean, have profoundly influenced her visual language and continue to inform her evolving body of work.
Her paintings are rooted in time spent immersed in the landscape. Responding directly to light, atmosphere, and environment, she works en plein air in watercolour, gouache, and charcoal, creating studies that capture the immediacy of a place. These works later inform larger studio paintings in oil , where memory and sensation take precedence over direct representation.
Ella’s practice explores the shifting qualities of light and colour across landscape, seascape, and the urban environment, as well as the beauty of everyday moments for Still life painting. Her work balances observation with intuition, embracing a painterly approach where gesture, mark-making, and process play a central role. The resulting compositions evoke both the physical experience of a place and the emotional resonance it leaves behind. She has exhibited internationally in Sydney, Tokyo, New York, New Jersey, London,
and the Cotswolds, and was elected a member of the Chelsea Art Society in 2023
