Lucy Pass is a self-taught contemporary painter, currently living and working in Cheltenham, UK. Her work is an exploration into the human condition and a means to give physical shape to the endless internal soup of human emotion. She uses a mix of representational and abstract elements to create dynamic portraits: half formed faces and figures hang in empty spaces, unclear whether falling apart or piecing themselves together, surrounded by a language of expressive marks and shapes. The aim is to spark introspective curiosity and collective therapy, viewing her work as an outstretched hand in the hope of finding quiet connection and mutual understanding in an infinitely confusing world.
She appeared on Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year 2019 which sparked a change in direction, driving her to intensively explore and expand her practice over the following years. As a result she has her work in private collections all over the world and has exhibited alongside renowned artists across the UK. Her work has been shortlisted for several awards and she was announced as the overall winner of both The British Art Prize in 2023 and The Guildford House Open in 2024.
