bio

My recent work has evolved from paintings inspired by remembered landscapes to works created predominantly en plein air. Rather than simply depicting a landscape, I aim to convey both the visual character and emotional resonance of a place. While capturing the fleeting quality of light remains central to my practice, I am equally interested in expressing texture, movement and atmosphere. My palette shifts with mood, frequently moving towards abstraction. Repurposed materials and discarded objects found on site are often also incorporated into the paint surface, enriching both the texture and, to me, adding to the sense of place, while, at worst, having no impact on the landscape from which they came. Working in oils and acrylics, I favour the palette knife—not only for spreading paint, but for firing, flicking and sculpting it across the surface. My paintings are built through layers of texture, where marks scratched back and revealed are as significant as those applied, creating images that balance energy with depth. Originally from Cheltenham but now based in Bristol, I have followed varied careers as a sports photographer for the national press and later as an NHS healthcare professional. I am now a full-time artist.
