bio

Olivia Mitchell is a contemporary painter who completed a Master’s in Fine Art in 2024. Since graduating, she has focused on creating more intimate, materially sensitive works. Her more recent abstractions continue to draw from the coastal walks that first informed her earlier muted, earthy palettes, while evolving through an increasingly experimental use of saturated blues, where colour functions as both a sensory and structural force. Rather than depicting the sea as a fixed image, she focuses on its behaviour — its rhythm, repetition, and constant motion. These qualities are embedded within her physical process of making. Surfaces are layered, disrupted, and reworked through gestures that echo tidal movement, allowing the paintings to operate as tactile investigations rather than direct representations of landscape. Deep blues establish a tonal foundation that is gradually built up and excavated over time, enabling each work to retain a sense of energy, fluidity, and atmospheric depth.
