THIS WEEK OUR FEATURED ARTIST IS JANE POWELL
Jane Powell is a painter of land and seascapes based in rural Worcestershire. Using both oil and acrylic painting, she captures the changing scapes in a vibrant, textural and expressive way, looking to both the environment around her and escaping to the wilds of the coast for inspiration.
Jane's seascapes give the feeling of the immense unknown and the lonely. A view through someone who feels a deep connection to the ocean and translates that, inviting the viewer to pause in a moment of contemplation. Her landscapes are light and exuberant, a discovery of the fresh, abundant nature around us. She explores colour throughout her work, capturing the multitude of complementary tones without exaggeration to form lively paintings filled with movement, from wind in the trees to crashing waves.
Jane builds her paintings up in layers of textural marks, pushing the paint and allowing its form and sculptural nature to be a focus, as important as the landscape itself. This building and scraping of paint helps her to add depth to her pieces, which emphasises her passages of light, glinting off water or penetrating clouds. A plein air painter, her affinity to the nature she depicts is evident from the sense of light and wonder she evokes in her paintings.
Jane's is currently showing in a group exhibition is in Gardens Gallery, Cheltenham.
