THIS FRIDAY OUR FEATURED ARTIST IS KARA SWEET

Kara Sweet is a nature and wildlife artist working in a variety of mediums from her home on Hayling Island in Hampshire. She depicts animals, birds and landscapes through watercolour, pen and wash and coloured pencils, portraying extraordinary detail and attention.

Her love for and interest in the natural world can be clearly seen, particularly in her beautifully observed studies of the birds she sees in the nature reserves of her home island. In these, her careful, intricate and characterful paintings of the different species display her understanding of their anatomy and her skill in painting their multitude of textures, giving them tactility and weight.

With a very soft, understated colour palette, she makes studies of flora and fauna that feel very much alive and speak to thoughts of conservation as she carefully and thoughtfully renders birds and plants in an almost botanical truth. She uses colour accurately but allows pops of natural vibrancy to sing through the page, making her works serve as both record and poignant artwork.

Her landscapes read as someone with a love of the natural world, kind and soft in their exploration of quiet splendour. Throughout her practice, there is nothing loud about Kara's work, just a deep care for nature and a want to express that through painting.
