ARTIST FEATURE | SARAH MIDDLETON

This month our artist feature is Sarah Middleton, a watercolour painter based in Painswick. She creates joyful, frenetic works on paper from her attic studio above Jackson's Art in Stroud. Centred primarily on landscapes, her practice is deeply rooted in the rhythms of seasonality and the quiet poetry of shifting environments. Through her paintings, Sarah captures the subtle relief of change – the passing of light, the turn of weather, and the gentle transformations of the natural world over the year.

Sarah's technique can be described as a beautiful balance of confidence and understanding of restraint. Working often with only a single large brush, she allows water and pigment to flow freely across the paper surface. With large, sweeping strokes, entire skies are encompassed in just a few fluid movements, letting colours run together to create new, unexpected hues without becoming muddy. Her work remains refreshingly simple and un-overworked; rather than forcing rigid detail, she relies on flowing line, sweeping movement, and the natural textures of layered washes and the paper itself for landscapes to take shape organically.

There is a deeply meditative, sensory, and intuitive quality to Sarah’s process. With an intimate understanding of her palette, she seems to know precisely how individual pigments react to water and how they converse as a whole; or, if not, she bravely embraces the uncertainty and goes with the flow, allowing colours to form serendipitous dialogues. She is not afraid to let the bare white of the paper speak, using it as a source of light that balances soft washes with delicate, intentional pops of colour.

Sarah’s work is an emotive discourse between artist, pigment, paper, and viewer. To complement her softly powerful, organic pieces, she uses thoughtful titles to tap directly into the resonance of her colour choices, guiding the observer to see the quiet, fleeting beauty within each landscape.

When she is not painting, Sarah, as an art historian, leads walks and talks with local organisations such as The Wilson and the Stroud Textiles Trust, and delivers lectures at The Painswick Centre, The Wilson and Jackson's Art, sharing her deep knowledge and enthusiasm for art history across a wide range of topics. Find out where you can catch a talk over on her website – all the links on her portfolio.
