Susan Smith Abstract artwork detail

THIS WEEK OUR FEATURED ARTIST IS SUSAN SMITH

Susan Smith is a mixed media artist based in Herefordshire. She creates expressive abstract paintings inspired by a sense of place, her own rural environment or memory.

Her use of colour and texture throughout her work reveals her fascination with painting as her medium and there is a clear sense of play and experimentation in her process. Viewers can feel the energy and joy with which her paintings have been made. An artist who enjoys her craft, reflected in the viewers gaze.

She creates collaged paintings by layering passages of texture and marks of paint with prepared papers or surfaces like maps and fabrics. These layers build up to reveal, hide and repeat, conveying a sense of play, naivety and excited exploration; more can be discovered with each interaction.

Susan's works can often invoke feelings of nostalgia but her use of bright colour palettes give a sense of joyful expression of memories real or reimagined. Her suggestive marks create narratives or hint at places, but with no literal reference the viewer is encouraged to let their mind wander through her created world.

Susan Exhibits regularly and you can catch her in the beautifully bucolically titled "In Search of The Perfect Hill" at Bloom Space in Eign Gate this March. Follow the link to our featured artists portfolio to find out more and to look through her works.
