BERONY ABRAHAM -- GRASSES

Grasses by Berony Abraham is a joyfully frenetic play in acrylic. Lively erratic mark-making captures the beautiful mayhem of grasses in a surprising but not irrational colour palette. Cool blues create the feeling of a dense mass of stalks, with bright greens punctuating the gloom with dashes of fresh abundance. Graphic without being representational, it is grasses as understood by their artist and reported to the viewer through textural scratches of paint. The light brightness of the flower heads gives dandelion-like ephemerality to the piece and creates a sense of depth as we view both the tightly packed roots and the tips emerging through and appearing to sway in the breeze. This movement keeps the eyes following from blade to blade, colour to colour, breath to breath. Berony's bold use of powerful colour is used to great effect here, taking a monotonous natural scene and making it playful and exotic.
