EMMA HOWELL PRESENTS DAY AFTER DAY
Day After Day (DAD) is a solo exhibition by Cotswolds-based painter Emma Howell, created during the first eighteen months of her daughter’s life. Moving through four seasons, Overstimulation, Endurance, Lessons and Becoming, the exhibition explores the physical intensity of early motherhood, repetition, patience, identity and the slow recovery of a sense of self.
The exhibition opens in the month marking 10 years since the death of Emma’s father, bringing grief into conversation with the experience of raising a child he will never meet. At the centre of the exhibition is The Alchemy of Motherhood, a large mixed-media canvas built over six months through paint, charcoal, pastel and repeated acts of love, tension and release.
Together, the works provide an honest account of love, depletion, devotion, grief and transformation.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Emma Howell is a British painter based in the Cotswolds. Working across paper and canvas, her practice moves between abstraction, still life and landscape, using colour, gesture and observation to explore memory, motherhood, grief and the emotional weight of ordinary life.
Her practice changes and evolves with the season of life she is moving through. Following the death of her father in 2016, painting became a way of processing experience and recovering a sense of awareness, presence and connection that grief had taken away. Early motherhood now shapes the work, while previous experiences of infertility, waiting and loss remain part of its emotional language. Her 2026 solo exhibition, Day After Day, captures a period of transition between the artist she was and the artist she is becoming, as the work moves towards a more refined and considered visual language.
Emma holds a First Class BA in Fine Art from the University of Gloucestershire and has exhibited and sold work internationally across Europe, North America, Australia and the Seychelles.
