SIXTEEN GALLERY | 7 -- 13 AUGUST

ALCHEMY OF COLOUR IS A VIBRANT JOINT EXHIBITION BY PAINTER JANET CHAPLIN AND CERAMICIST CAROLINE DAVIES, CELEBRATING THE MAGICAL SYNERGY BETWEEN THEIR WORK.

The title reflects the way colour transforms and unites their distinctive practices -- from Janet's expressive, layered paintings to Caroline’s richly glazed ceramics. Together, their work creates a harmonious dialogue, where colour becomes the connecting force -- a true alchemy of artistic vision.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

JANET CHAPLIN

Janet’s work is preoccupied with colour and contrasts, inspired by artists such as Howard Hoskins, early Mondrian, Maggie Hamblin and Matisse to name just a few. From her studio at Craft Renaissance in the picturesque Usk Valley, she creates a vibrant expression of Wales and beyond, from atmospheric seascapes to rich textural landscapes. In her collaboration with Caroline, she explores the colour of the glazes and raw clay, in Caroline’s ceramic. That point of horizon were earth meets sky and the alchemy of the interaction. Florescent and iridescent paint give the surface life and movement. This collection includes some brand new work exploring the shapes of Caroline’s tall thin jugs and echoing the tall thin canvases Janet sometimes uses and of course the drips.

You can find Janet at her studio: Studio Craft Renaissance Kemeys Commander, Usk NP15 1JU

CAROLINE DAVIES

Caroline Davies is a Herefordshire-based ceramicist who has been working with clay on and off for over 30 years and is now a full-time potter. Her practice is rooted in the traditional art of throwing, working primarily with stoneware clay to create forms that are both functional and expressive. Caroline is particularly drawn to the layering of glazes, exploring the subtle alchemy that happens when surface, colour, and fire interact. Her work is deeply influenced by the guidance and inspiration of celebrated potters Derek Lamb and Joan Doherty, whose mentorship helped shape her thoughtful and intuitive approach to ceramics.

Caroline's work is also on display at Made in Ross, Market House, Ross on Wye
