ABOUT THE ARTIST

Nick Heap’s work is in private collections around the world and also in the UK National Collection. He has been an exhibitor at the prestigious National Portrait Gallery (a finalist in the Portrait Awards), The Mall Galleries and Outlined Gallery, London, The John Davies Gallery and Sixteen Gallery, Cheltenham amongst others. He has shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions across the UK and was chairman of the Devon Arts Network.
Nick has appeared several times on the BBC discussing arts and creativity, including, notably, arguing with Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales, about copyright protection for artists!
Nick now lives in Cheltenham with his wife and no cats (presently).
Gaining his BA Fine Arts at Birmingham School of Art and then living in Devon and Hong Kong before returning to the Cotswolds, Nick brings a unique eye to the British landscape. This exhibition presents a selection of work created over the past couple of years as he has explored the intense vibrancy and powerful energy of the landscape, the built environment and emotive atmospheric interiors. Encompassing figurative, abstract and an exhilarating blend, Nick’s oil paintings exude energy and joy in the natural world.
“I’m a colourists first and foremost. If there is a common feature that also runs through my landscape work it is theatricality; playing with extraordinary lighting, moods and exaggeration. I’m influenced by artists from Kandinsky and Macke to Fred Cuming and Brian Rutenberg. I’m also very much inspired by early Autochromes and classic Japanese Ukiyo-e prints."
