SUE COLYER, JAN GRIFFITHS, AMELIA NEWTON, LUCILLE SCOTT, ELISA DODD AND JEANNETTE LUCZKOWSKI
Six established artists and makers have once again decided to shake and challenge each other with new ideas and techniques to enhance their current practices.
On display at 'Unbound' will include their established work as well as pieces derived from a single image used for this year’s experiments, sketchbooks and final outcomes.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
SUE COLYER
"I am a contemporary watercolour artist whose work centres on freedom of expression and emotional connection. My practice is rooted in creating a sense of calm and sanctuary — artworks that invite people to pause, breathe, and reflect within the spaces they inhabit.
My paintings are loosely inspired by landscape, not as literal depictions, but as intuitive and emotional responses to a place. This approach allows the work to feel open and atmospheric, offering a quiet connection that is particularly suited to hotels, public buildings, and thoughtfully designed interiors. I aim to create work that uplifts, reassures, and enhances the emotional experience of a space.
Although watercolour is often perceived as delicate or traditional, I use it in a contemporary and expressive way. For me, it is a medium that demands courage, patience, and intuition. My aim is to create paintings that work in any environment. In a busy world, they offer a sense of calm and emotional connection."
JAN GRIFFITHS
Hand-built Primative Pots inspired by the pebble beaches of the Solent coast, rural landscape and skies of Hampshire. Jan`s work is mostly made from reclaimed and found materials initially being made as a flat slab of clay before shaping and scratching back the surface imitating sea corrosion. A layer of porcelain slip is applied and lightly burnished with a pebble and the pieces are then bisque fired to give them strength prior to raku or pit firing using seaweed, leaves, horsehair and other organic materials all gathered locally. When these materials vaporise in the kiln the colour is transferred to the ceramics. It is not until they are cooled and cleaned that they fully reveal their surface which is then polished using beeswax. It is a very exciting process to be involved in.
Jan also produces a range of stoneware fired pieces and this collection includes waterproof vases and garden stones. Also, she has experimented reclaiming material from a recent landslide on the Isle of Wight to make a small vessel and used IOW seaweed on other pieces.
AMELIA NEWTON
"I have always been drawn to surface pattern. My work is strongly influenced by objects, places and memory.
Ideas start as small paintings, collages or paper prints and are then re-imagined into digital designs for scarves and cushions. The digital process allows for the nuances of colour to be picked up giving the finished fabrics quite a painterly feel and for me this is particularly liberating. Frequently I extract a small detail and use it in a different context, maybe as another layer to an existing image or repeated to give a very different feel all together. On some designs I draw freehand digital lines that weave their way across the surface. It’s the continual layering of image texture and mark that I find especially fascinating.
I design the fabrics as individual panels with a cushion or scarf in mind. The final designs are brimming with sumptuous colour and pattern printed on silk wools and velvets."
LUCILLE SCOTT
" I work as an artist blacksmith creating hand forged metal items inspired by nature and my love for dance and music. The appeal of working with iron lies in the fluidity of the metal and the ability to freeze movement in time. In addition there is the traditional role of blacksmiths, the permanence of the work and passing on the tradition to all around us.
My work is constantly developing, in 2015 I launched Earth, Water and Fire, a collection of work using materials born of the earth, inspired by the sea and formed in fire. This work was originally inspired by my love of colour but an aversion to painting metal so I decided to add colour by using other mediums. The work is made in collaboration with other artists using crafts that naturally provide colour. In 2019 I started to fuse glass myself to allow me to extend the range of unique sculptures I create .....so much fun to be had!"
ELISA DODD
" I design and create colourful, contemporary glass art pieces using the method of glass fusing. These include large bowls, wall art and sculptures. My inspiration mainly comes from my travel adventures, exploring the movement and texture of wildlife and landscapes. I use the glass to capture and recreate these feelings, creating a mood or energy with the reflective colours.

JEANNETTE LUCZKOWSKI
" The sweep of the bay where I live carries the sounds and sights of time. The sea, bound by the revetment, ‘thraps’ and beats against the wall at high tide. The onslaught of sun, wind and rain, carve out shapes in the cliff face where silent witnesses stand invisibly in the hollows.
My body of work is a response to this bay, experimenting with a range of media, attempting to capture the essence of this special place and the continual ebb and flow of the elements making their mark upon the land and sea."
