SIXTEEN GALLERY | 21 – 27 MAY

SAM WATERS, MORVEN BROWNE, BARBARA WHITBOURN AND SUE COLYER PRESENT UNSCRIPTED: AN EXHIBITION SHAPED BY INSTINCT AND A LOVE OF SEEING WHERE THE WORK WANTS TO GO.

Bringing together four artists with beautifully complementary practices, Unscripted celebrates creativity without a plan — responding to mood, movement, nature and emotion as they unfold. The exhibition features rich, layered abstracts, expressive watercolours, loose florals and landscapes, alongside bronze sculptures inspired by the natural world. Calm, atmospheric and quietly expressive, the works invite you to slow down, take a breath, and connect in your own way. Art made from the heart — intuitive, unforced, and full of feeling.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

SAM WATERS

Sam Waters is a Shropshire-based painter whose work is shaped by landscape, texture, and lived experience. With a BA (Hons) in ceramics and textiles, her exploration of printmaking expanded her creative language, adding depth and complexity to her paintings. Sam has exhibited at art fairs and exhibitions across the UK, including RBSA, and was shortlisted for the Women in Art Prize in 2024.

Her urban-inspired pieces evoke striking contrasts, built through rich layers, muted palettes, and flashes of vibrant colour. Working primarily in acrylic, bold marks, shapes, and mono-printing reference the worn histories of industrial buildings. In

contrast, her floral works burst with colour and energy, celebrating the joy and vitality of nature. Sam’s return to creative practice after a long corporate career brings a distinctive depth and authenticity to her work.

MORVEN BROWNE

Morven’s work explores the interplay of movement and light within the environment, and the influence of meteorological factors on the colours and shadows that surround us.

Using jewellery making techniques, she creates repeating sculptural forms which, when grouped, become small installations and kinetic sculptures.

Morven works from a studio on the North Wales/Shropshire/Cheshire border, where she is able to totally immerse herself in the sights and sounds of her rural location

BARBARA WHITBOURN

As an artist based in Hampshire, Barbara’s work is an exploration of the world through the lens of abstraction. Drawing inspiration from life and landscape, she uses acrylic and mixed media to create dynamic compositions. Her practice is rooted in capturing subtle textures and rhythms of life.

Through a vibrant palette and layered techniques, Barbara uses abstraction to allow the viewer to experience the subject through their own interpretation and emotional response. She often incorporates elements of texture, pattern, and materiality to enrich the visual dialogue and challenge perceptions.

Having studied at Newlyn School of Art, her journey has been shaped by a desire to push the boundaries of traditional forms. Her work is abstract yet invites the viewer to interpret and reflect on their own experiences with the world around them.

For Barbara, “Art is a continuous conversation between the inner and outer worlds—between what I see it and how I feel. Each piece is a step toward capturing a fleeting moment in time, transformed into a visual narrative that invites personal interpretation and connection”.

SUE COLYER

Sue is a self-taught contemporary watercolour artist whose work centres on freedom of expression and emotional connection. Her practice is rooted in creating a sense of calm and sanctuary — artworks that invite people to pause, breathe, and reflect within the spaces they inhabit.

Although watercolour is often perceived as delicate or traditional, Sue uses it in a contemporary and expressive way believing it is a medium that demands courage, patience, and intuition.

Her paintings are loosely inspired by landscape, not as literal depictions, but a intuitive and emotional responses to place. This approach allows the work to feel open and atmospheric, offering a quiet connection to the viewer. Sue aims to create work that uplifts, reassures, and enhances the emotional experience of any space.
