SIXTEEN GALLERY | 6 -- 12 NOVEMBER

AN EXHIBITION BY JANE BRIGHTON, ANDY GOODWIN AND SHAUN HUGHES. VIEWPOINTS IS AN INTERESTINGLY DIVERSE SHOW LEANING TOWARDS THE ABSTRACT AND THE MAGICAL, INSPIRED BY THE ARTISTS LIVED EXPERIENCES.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

SHAUN HUGHES

" I devote much of my time to painting and giving talks on art history. I have exhibited widely in the region both individually and as member of different groups. I tend to work thematically and am inspired by all sorts of things: ancient history, maps, travels, jazz and classical music and patterns and forms of nature. I work mainly in acrylic and oil paint and experiment with different approaches depending upon the theme. Although linked to the same starting point the 'art' often takes over and leads me down unexpected pathways. I have an MA Art and Design from the University of London and have published on my specialist research subject Art Based Learning. I am a member of the Cheltenham Group of Artists."

ANDY GOODWIN

"My compositions are predominantly acrylic paintings or collages using torn rather than cut paper. Inspired by landscape, sea or cloudscapes my work attempts to record both the 'permanent' and transient nature of our environment. I have exhibited throughout the West Midlands including the RWA Bristol (Open Exhibition), at Cheltenham Jazz Festival and here at Sixteen on a number of occasions. Founder member of Montpellier Group of Artists. Member of the Cheltenham Group of Artists. I have a Distinction in Art and Design."

JANE BRIGHTON

" Painting and drawing for me have always been magic and my earliest memories are of drawing on anything I could find and realising there was such a thing as making marks in colour. I work intuitively, using free association. Until I have found something similar to that described by Ruskin in the sensation of listening to music 'all art constantly aspires to the condition of music'. At the age of 18 I won a place at the Slade school of art and studied there for 4 years when Coldstream was the professor. Although painting and drawing are my first love I have also taught, firstly in Uganda, and then in secondary schools and in Further Education. A curiosity about the play of the unconscious in art led me to study art psychotherapy at Goldsmiths and I have worked and still do with adults and groups as an art psychotherapist. As a mature student I went back to art college to achieve the MA in Fine Art. I am a member of the United Society of Artists and have exhibited widely."
