ARTIST FEATURE | FIONA HODGETTS

This month our artist feature is Fiona Hodgetts. Fiona is a Warwickshire-based oil painter whose immersive works are a visceral response to light, place, and memory. She creates dramatic sweeping landscapes, seascapes, and skyscapes, as expansive as they are quiet, which are imbued with a deep sense of atmosphere.

Fiona's practice is a multi-layered process that builds both physical texture and emotional depth. Beginning with a classical grisaille underpainting, she layers glazes alongside heavy impasto, creating vibrant, light-filled scenes. Her use of thick, textured paint allows her to sculpt the tactile reality of the land and elements – from dense, grassy fields and slick, reflective waters to heavy, bruised skies.

Fiona’s all-encompassing vistas carry a quiet, often brooding dramatic weight. Though sea, land, and sky are clearly defined within her compositions, they speak as a single, cohesive force. She has an intuitive eye for the fleeting movement of light: the quick shimmer across open water, a piercing break in a stormy cloud, or a dancing beam of sunlight illuminating a patch of ground. These moments give her paintings an energy that makes places feel alive and constantly in motion.

Fiona’s work does more than sensitively document a geographic location. While her pieces capture the distinct mood and essence of a place, they simultaneously invite the viewer into a dream-like half-light; a realm of heightened, saturated reality where memory and imagination meet. Through her rich palettes and dramatic compositions, Fiona constructs her own intense, luminous world, offering a powerful reflection on the wild places that move us.
