THIS WEEK OUR FEATURED ARTIST IS PAUL PARK
Paul Park is a Cheltenham-based artist currently working in oil pastel, creating vibrant, otherworldly depictions of the world he experiences around him. After suffering a stroke and following a life-changing journey of recovery and rehabilitation, Paul has turned to drawing and began a new path as an artist.
Led by his sheer abundance of love for life, Paul has channelled his fresh view on the world into works which celebrate adventure, his works fizzing with colour and telling tales of a hopeful place. Viewing Paul's work is taking a journey into a world where candy-coloured trees and rainbow hills frolic, where tropical fish swim, houses make no physical sense, and everything is pure, unbridled joy.
Paul uses Neopastels to achieve his highly saturated, bold palette, working in big blocky shapes, offsetting areas of flatness with detailed passages of texture - with a focus on brickwork and materiality. These contrasts bring his work alive, giving a charming sense of narrative and inviting curious thoughts such as: Who lives in that house? Can I stand on the hills, or will they melt like marshmallow? Paul invites the viewer to be just as playful as he and gives a little sweet break from reality to weary minds.
