SARAH KNIGHT

Sarah Knight is an artist based in London, working with a duality of practice, between painting and printmaking; allowing each side to inform and inspire the other. Throughout both sides of her practice is a strong sense of line, of form, of attention to surface and to texture, a soft subtle use of colour and a continued sense of capturing the beauty of the natural world.

Her paintings explore the land and sea in varied states of semi-abstraction. They take on the form of the memory of space, of shape and feeling rather than a direct view. These are reflections on a sense of place, and her personal experiences. Beginning with sketches, she works her paintings from her initial thoughts into explorations of what she remembers, reflecting on the landscape through the prism of time, emotion and connection.

The mixing of oils, acrylics, pastel and charcoal allow Sarah to pay deep attention to the textures and tones she encounters. She uses colours which are subtle, muted, deep but not exaggerated. She beautifully captures the huge horizons, sweeping, leading lines of the sea and the land. She takes the viewer on the journey with her, or holds in you stillness, where the sea meets the land; calm but wild.

Sarah's linos are softer, more delicate than her painting, less extraverted, but no less full of movement. Botanical and full of texture they follow the rhythm of line from her paintings. Finished with pencil detail these prints capture more intimate textures from natural world, grasses, reeds, leaves, seeds; they hone in on the details her sweeping paintings soften.

Somewhere between observation and pattern, they explore a different kind of mark, but reflect the sense of freedom and unconfined wildness that Sarah captures in her paintings. These single or duel colour works have an almost graphic feel but with a softness, an ephemerality of line which feels rooted in reality and reflects back through to her paintings.
