TANIA FULLERTON

This month, our artist feature is Tania Fullerton, a still life painter based in Nailsworth, whose work offers a fresh, modern perspective on traditional genres. Working primarily in oil on a small, deliberate scale, she creates intimate portraits of objects and quiet interior scenes, growing her own world in the things and spaces she depicts.

At the centre of her practice is a connection with found and forgotten objects: discarded tableware at the back of kitchen cupboards or vases discovered in local charity shops. Tania elevates these mundane, ordinary treasures by placing them in unusual environments, establishing compositions and pairings that often feel delightfully uncanny. She pairs simple, clean forms against highly textured backgrounds, creating a compelling material tension that invites the viewer to look closer. Her close-crop framing highlights a subtle play of light and shadow, prompting us to pause, focus, and question the stories behind each vessel or trinket.

Beyond individual objects, Tania expands outwards to create beautifully warm, inviting interiors. Depicting everyday domestic spaces, these works are deeply imbued with mood, memory, and emotional sensitivity and become safe, comforting sanctuaries. A defining characteristic of these is the delicate balance between these quiet indoor environments and a view directed outwards through a window or doorway, grounding the scene in a tangible sense of place. These pieces delight in both an intimacy of a homely space and the wide expanse of the wild beyond.

Colour plays a crucial role in creating atmosphere in both Tania's still lifes and interior scenes. She utilises a sensitive palette that balances bright, surprising accents with grounding, calming tones, making her compositions feel both exotic and recognisably everyday. Because her pieces are intentionally compact, they carry a natural physical intimacy, drawing viewers in and encouraging them to step near to appreciate the delicate surface detail.

Tania gives the quiet, forgotten corners of the world a touch of magic, crafting scenes and moments that warmly invite us to linger and reflect.

Alongside her own practice, Tania is actively involved in the local arts community and currently works with Five Valleys Gallery, Stroud, where you can find her work in real life. When you cant get there, find her latest works on her portfolio here.
