MARY HARRISON
FLYING CARPET SERIES: OH WE DID LOVE TO BE BESIDE THE SEASIDE
Graphite, watercolour and plant-based inks on Khadi paper
In Mary Harrison's work, the titles are almost as intricate as the pieces themselves, weaving narrative and detail even at a surface level. This piece from Mary encapsulates the beautiful use of storytelling, texture, colour and heart that she shows in all her work. There is thought and purpose in all aspects of this piece, from the composition of the disparate elements to how the overall image lives on the page, through to the choice of organic materials Mary works with. Described beautifully and aptly by Mary as a painted drawing, the feeling of the line and the lightness of touch keeps the work joyful as it is intriguing and leaves a fresh, sketch-like impression of someone desperate to get their thoughts quickly onto a page but not at all rushed. Touches such as the top left corner folding away are delicious in their feeling of weighty reality, where other moments are surreal and, at times, indecipherable. She balances a liberal use of colours sensitively all within one palette, so the image feels both colourful and yet not overpowering, all these aspects culminating in a delicate, thought-provoking piece.
