ARTISTS | INTRODUCING
CAT THORNE AND OLIVIA MITCHELL
Meet two of our newest members of the collective, Cat Thorne and Olivia Mitchell. These two artists bring some fresh approaches and styles to our community with their contemporary work. One bold and full of character, the other understated with deep connection to the earth; we're celebrating our differences through the beautiful practices of these artists. Read on to find out a little about these two artists.
CAT THORNE
Cat Thorne is a figurative artist working from her studio on Leckhampton Hill in Cheltenham. Inspired by fashion, and exploring the figures, the colours, patterns and materiality of the fashion world, she creates her "Fashion Ladies" portraits of style, of muses in an imaginary scene.
Cat uses both acrylics and oils, working loosely, creating dynamic figures who are at once both weighted in reality and barely there. She focuses on the textures and patterns of the materials, creating rich, overwhelming and vibrant depictions of beautiful garments; all these elements culminating in vivacious, punchy yet intimate pieces.
Cat uses her figures to create narratives, and each figure carries its own personality. She gives the viewer insights into an imaginary life, creating intrigue through her sometimes mysterious, sometimes ironic, sometimes deeply humorous characters.
You can find Cat's work at her open studios this month, or up in Edinburgh at The House of Smalls until the end of June. Check out her portfolio for more info
OLIVIA MITCHELL
Olivia Mitchell is a contemporary abstract artist who recently completed her MA in Fine Art. Her work is rooted in the natural world, her connection expressed through instinctive gestural marks, exploring rhythm and texture.
Olivia's earthy, layered, tactile pieces develop from her practice of building and scraping, adding and revealing as she grows her surfaces, giving depth and feeling; immersing in the physicality of the practice. Using acrylic paint, ink and charcoal, she explores materials and marks, letting the processes shape and guide her, creating a sense of cadence and movement.
Exploring organic textures and colours, Olivia's work embraces accident and chance, playing with the natural unpredictability of her materials, mirroring nature's expression through mineral colour and intimate composition.
Most recently, she has collaborated with Anton and K Decorative Antiques to create a collection of monochromatic works on canvas which complement the naturally understated elegance of their collection. Find them here, or check out her portfolio. Her practice continues to evolve as she draws from the organic materials she collects around her.
