TAMSIN HYDE PRESENTS THE LIE OF THE LAND
FEATURING WORK CREATED OVER THE PAST YEAR, THIS EXHIBITION CENTRES ON THE EXPERIENCE OF WALKING AS A WAY OF SEEING, REMEMBERING AND BELONGING.
The work grows out of time spent moving slowly through the English countryside, where change is subtle but constant. The exhibition considers landscape as something shaped as much by people as by nature. The act of walking becomes a way of connecting with those who have passed through the same spaces before, tracing routes that have been worn into the land through use rather than design.
Tamsin’s recent work expands this idea through a visual language drawn from historic maps. Fragments of old land surveys, field boundaries, and footpath markings are torn and reassembled into layered collages. These pieces echo the structure of the landscape itself, where natural growth and human intervention overlap and blur.
ABOUT THE ARTIST

Tamsin Hyde is an abstract painter whose creative process is rooted in intuition and expressive mark making. Working primarily in oil and acrylic, she approaches each canvas as an exploration, layering and removing paint to evoke atmosphere and emotion rather than literal representation. Guided by instinct, her paintings evolve organically, allowing the interplay of colour, texture, and gesture to reveal the essence of a place and her personal response to it. The act of painting becomes a journey, with each work taking on a life of its own as she distils fleeting impressions and memories into visual form.
Inspired by the rolling hills and valleys of the Cotswolds, Tamsin draws from the rhythms of nature observed during her walks and sketches in the countryside. The changing seasons and subtle shifts in light and landscape inform her practice, reflecting the ongoing dialogue between environment and self.
Tamsin holds a BA in Fine Art (Painting and Drawing) from the University of Gloucestershire, awarded in 2014. She is an active member of the Cheltenham Group of Artists and the Sixteen Gallery Collective. Her work has been showcased in both solo and group exhibitions and is held in private collections across the UK and internationally. Based in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, Tamsin continues to develop her distinctive approach to abstract painting from her studio.
